Description
Varistors can be considered to be a form of resistor in which the resistance changes significantly with the applied voltage. The most common type of varistor utilise a metal oxide and hence they are often known as metal oxide varistors, or MOV for short. Varistors are used as control or compensation elements in circuits either to provide optimal operating conditions or to protect against excessive transient voltages. When used as protection devices, they shunt the current created by the excessive voltage away from sensitive components when triggered.
